Engineering Masterpieces in Fresnaye, Cape Town

If you stand in Head Road in Fresnaye you feel like you are on top of the world! The views are awesome and the houses spectacular feats of engineering. Moroff & Kuhne has been associated with a number of the houses in the area and Peter Gouvias, who was involved in most of these projects,  took the time to show us these masterpieces up close.

The houses in this area reflect the high standard of architecture and engineering in South Africa today. “Fresnaye houses pose great engineering challenges due to the gradient of most of the stands – we view them as challenges and opportunities to test our skills!” explains Peter.

“These are long term projects – it can take anything up to three years to complete a house here. The logistics involved are huge as you can imagine due to the terrain.”

39 Head Road is set up right against the mountain side and is a truly majestic house.  The pillars supporting the concrete slabs on which the house and pool rest are about 9-10 metres high and extend at least three metres below current ground level.

House Blacher, on Ocean View Drive designed by Greg Wright Architects kept part of the original house in the new design but is still a complex design in engineering terms.  The house, which is almost complete, has generous window space, allowing uninterrupted views of the sea.  The front columns supporting the house are 6-7 metres high and extend six metres below current ground level.

We are involved in many interesting projects in the Fresnaye area and we continually  add  to our portfolio.
